What they say:
'Sometimes evil is not born of madness, but madness of evil.
A rogue CIA agent partners with the brother of a slain colleague to uncover a conspiracy deep in the intelligence community. But a shadow follows them: a killer bent on a revenge so terrible, it is only matched by the crimes committed against him. In the end, no one escapes unscathed, no beliefs will go unchallenged, and no wrong will escape the terrible, final, and extraordinary retribution.'
Today’s review is brought to you by my brother Jamie (Twitter: @xjammacx) .
Jamie lives in the West Midlands with his wife and daughter. He is an avid reader and enjoys reading on his commute to and from work.
One of his favourite books (ok it’s a trilogy) is The Lord of the Ring’s, a series that thankfully wasn’t ruined when it made it to the big screen.
Although Jamie still tries to read frequently, his reading choices have altered slightly since the birth of his daughter and he can now quote Rapunzel word for word.
"You just read a book and then write a review, this should be easy" I told myself when I was handed Erec Stebbins' Extraordinary Retribution to read. The problem is it's not easy especially when the book is as good as this one is. I could just give it 5 stars and write "Superb" underneath but this book deserves more, much more.
The 3 main characters, Father Francisco Lopez, Agent Sara Houston and "the Wraith" manage to portray the best and worst in all of us whilst the organisations they fight against prove the old adage that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Extraordinary Retribution is not a book about saving a person a nation or the world deep down it's about saving our humanity. At a time when church attendances are at an all time low and people are becoming more aware of the extreme's governments will go to in the name of national security it's fitting that a flawed priest dealing with the loss of his brother and a crisis of faith finds himself helping a disillusioned CIA agent fight against a cartel of power brokers and an evil created by the country she is sworn to protect.
Stebbins has clearly thought about where he wants to take his readers and does so at breakneck speed. I was pulled from the first page to the last word by a thrilling tale which at times, beautifully, blurred the line between protagonist and antagonist of how the more extreme actions in the fight against terrorism could backfire against the perpetrators.
A fantastic read which I hope the author will follow up on.
